Chapter 7: Nothing is Set in Stone.
I tried to find a foothold on the steep rocky slope, but I soon found that the craggy formation under my feet began to give way when I put my full weight on it. Within seconds, I was careening down the south face of the mountain. When I came to a rest some 40 feet below, I was thankful to have escaped from the ordeal intact. Then, I looked over to my left.
I had knocked a large boulder loose during my tumble and it had fallen squarely on my left shoulder, crushing my scapula and humerus in the process. I tugged and yanked at the boulder, but the great weight was no match for my efforts. Eventually, I decided that there was only one way to escape. I would have to sever my arm as soon as possible.
